Syktyvkar is the capital of the Komi Republic, an autonomous republic of the Russian Federation. Its name means "River City" in the combination of the sentences "Syktyv" meaning river and "snow" city in Komi language. It was declared the capital of the Komi Republic in 1936, during the reign of the Soviet Socialist Republic.
